Merit Award: Fiber
Fiber intrigues me. I see it as
a basic element that connects us organically and symbolically
with the natural world. From plant and animal fibers to
our very bodies of skin and bone and sinew, we are all
raw material immersed in the mystery of life. My work
is an elemental exploration of raw material; fiber, thread,
color, energy and movement—manipulated by human
hands with motions ancient as time: knit, woven, cut,
stitched, stretched, folded, shaped, transformed. It
is a multi-layered journey, an improvisational dance to evoke
the things that link us, especially to nature. I see clothing
as our attire and our covering. Our shelter. Our expression.
What we wear changes us. My newest work is recycled: reclaiming
gently worn clothing and reconstructing it into
a new story. My repertoire today includes wraps,
scarves, mantels, day bags with knit pockets, knit sweaters,
gratitude bags.
